Quick Notes about EQAO

Dear Parent's

Next week, your child will be completing Provincial Testing (EQAO)! By working together, we can make your child's test experience positive and successful.  Here are some suggestions that you can do to help your child succeed:

  • Make sure you child gets a good night's rest
  • Have your child eat a healthy breakfast
  • Make sure your child arrives at school on time
  • Gently encourage your child to do their best
In the classroom, we have focused on some great testing strategies. Please review them with your child as well. The students have been practising the new format, free to check out the new format http://www.eqao.com/

Don't Stress the Test, Give It Your Best!

Listen carefully to the oral directions.
then read the directions carefully by yourself and highlight, circle, or underline key words

Even if you think you know the answer...
read all the answer choices carefully before you make a decision.
You may find an even better answer!

If you know the answer,
mark your answer carefully and go to the next question

If you don't know the answer,
highlight, circle, or underline key words that can help you determine the answer

Cross out the answer choices...
that you know are definitely wrong!

If you're still not sure,
make a reasonable guess. Ask yourself which is true more often or which answer makes
   more sense

Avoid spending too much time struggling with one question
If you are not sure of an answer, put a check mark beside the question and move on

After you have finished the test,
go back and complete the ones with check marks that you skipped.
Then review the section one final time

RELAX AND DO YOUR BEST!

SLU Celebrates Catholic Education Week 2015

This week, schools across Ottawa will celebrate Catholic Education week. During this week, we will be hosting a variety of activities to showcase Catholic Education at its best. Please make sure to check the Week at a Glance and check Twitter daily to see what is happening at SLU. This coming Thursday, SLU will be hosting an evening performance with Emmanuel Jal. If you have not bought your tickets, please do so this week. Emmanuel Jal and SLU together are raising funds to help build a school and housing for over 300 orphans in South Sudan. It is with your generosity and the commitment of the staff and students from SLU that will make this a success. We hope to see you this coming Thursday at SLU from 6-8, and boogie the night while raising money for a great cause!

This past week the grade 5 and 6 students attended their very first MakerFaire. The students participated in various stations and workshops from 3D printing to programming and coding using Minecraft.
A huge thank you to St. Anthony and Ms Iverson for coordinating the day for us.

EXCITING NEWS!!!

This week, all students in my class will have access to a chromebook. The chromebook has been signed out to each individual student in order for him or her to access some great tools. At this point, students will not be taking the devices home, they will remain at school.  I have decided that students will no longer use the paper agenda but will move to Google Calendar. Over the next week, students will learn where to find their calendar, how to access information as well as input schedules for themselves. This is a great organizational tool for students to get in the habit of using. Stay tuned, more information will be coming....

In terms of contacting me, if you have a message about your child being absent or late, please call the school or email to the school email - Luke.Ottawa@ocsb.ca. If you would like to contact me you can email me at adriana.porcari@ocsb.ca and I will call you.

Thank you and stay tuned for Education Week next week! Remember to purchase your tickets to the Emmanuel Jal Concert and buy your key to success necklace! They are $3!

Happy Easter

Wishing everybody a Happy Easter!

Monday, March 30, 2015

Hello Everyone

Our Social Justice Group has taken on a campaign to raise funds for Pagak School in the South Sudan. We are EXTREMELY EXCITED about taking this on.  The school will provide lodgings, food, clothes and an education for 300 orphaned Sudanese children.  We really want to make a difference and this just feels right to us.

We hope you will help our campaign by spreading the word and posting our gofundme account where you feel comfortable.  Please tell your family and friends about it.  100% of the funds goes back to the school!! The project requires approximately $170,000.

We are having a fundraising event in May wherein Emmanuel Jai will be performing to raise funds for the Pagak school in South Sudan.  Again, please pass the word as we will be selling tickets.  We would like who ever would like to get involved with us, to get involved.

You can donate at the following:

Week at a Glance

The week at a glance has been updated for this week, please make sure to check the week at a glance and twitter to stay up to date with things happening this week. We have a busy week!

Palm Sunday

Today marks the beginning of Holy Week!  We mark the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, the week before his death and resurrection.  When Jesus entered into Jerusalem, the crowds greeted him by waving palm branches and covering his path with palm branches. Short following this event, Jesus begins his journey to the cross.

Creating Dream Houses

As part of our measurement unit, the students are working on creating their dream house floor plan. With this project, they are using a online program called Floor Planner (Google App) that allows them to design a home according to specific dimensions. The students are then going to find the area of each room and the total area of their house. They will then use sample pieces of carpet, flooring, from Home Depot with the unit price to figure out the cost of flooring for their home. Please follow along with us as we document our journey.

The students are having a blast working on this area project. They are able to select their own furniture.
